St. Petersburg hosted the first meeting of the CSTO member states' Coordinating Council on biological security. Head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova was elected as its Chairperson 15.12.2022

On 15 December, in St. Petersburg, the first meeting of the Coordinating Council of the authorized bodies of the CSTO member states on biological security was held. Anna Yurievna Popova, Head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being (Rospotrebnadzor), Chief State Sanitary Inspector of the Russian Federation, was elected as its Chairperson

The Council was established by a decision of the CSTO Committee of Secretaries of the Security Council on September 15, 2021. The purpose of the new structure is to coordinate activities and cooperation in preventing and countering biological threats and to create a reliable system for ensuring the biological security of the CSTO member states.

The first meeting of the Council was attended by representatives of all member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Members of the Coordinating Council have discussed plans of interaction on joint response to biological threats and issues of coordination of the CSTO member states' positions on strengthening the BWTC regime, joint formation of radiation, chemical and biological protection.

The meeting also discussed organizational issues of the council, including interaction on biosafety issues in day-to-day operations.
